Black Owned Brands at Places You're Already Shopping

As we’re all making a more conscious effort to spend our money at businesses owned by Black men and women, we wanted to share some brands that are on the shelves of stores you probably visit frequently - Target, Sephora, Nordstrom’s, and more. So, the next time you are running errands you can pick up some things from Black-owned businesses.

The Lip Bar

The Lip Bar started with a very unconventional belief in the makeup industry, the belief that “you are enough”. The Lip Bar seeks to enhance a user's natural beauty. Using their online Foundation Match Generator, you can put in your old brand and shade and they will tell you which Lip Bar shade is best for you. Started by Melissa Butler brewing makeup in her kitchen and later was turned down by Shark Tank, The Lip Bar has grown into a global makeup brand. In addition to being available at Target, The Lip Bar has its first brick and mortar shop open in Melissa’s hometown, Detroit.

Botanika

This hair care company is all about herbs. Botanika uses herbs to “stimulate hair growth, smooth hair, and add shine”.  With a full line of hair care products from serums, deep moisturizing masks, mousse, and more, Botanika has something for every hair type.

BLK & BOLD

Founded just two years ago, BLK & BOLD is now one of Amazon’s best-selling coffee brands and is now a favorite at Target too! Founded by childhood best-friends, BLK & BOLD incorporates social impact into their business model by donating 5% of profits to organizations supporting at-risk youth.

Colored Raine Cosmetics

Founded by Brooklyn-born, Loraine Dowdy, Colored Raine is a cosmetics company with the mission to “spread awareness of diversity through beauty and to embrace all aspects of color through unity.” The makeup line features everything you need to doll up your eyes, lips, and face.

Chocolate Chip Cookies from Partake Foods

When she learned her daughter had severe food allergies, Denise set out to find yummy snacks to feed her daughter but was unable to find any. So, Denise created her own, building the snack company – Partake, which sells 8 different types of cookies, everything from carrot cake to ginger snap, to the classic, chocolate chip.

SEPHORA

KNC Beauty

Just a few years ago, KNC created the first all-natural collagen boosting lip mask and has now grown into a multi-product self-care business. KNC Beauty offers lip balms and scrubs, as well as an all-natural retinol infused eye mask. You can find KNC products at Nordstrom's, Sephora, and Urban Outfitters.

Pat McGrath Labs

Believing that makeup is a movement, Pat McGrath set out to build her own cosmetics empire. Now the company offers a high-end line of makeup that includes “in a quartet of exquisite palettes, 50 legendary lipsticks, a divine dozen eyeliners and five fetish-worthy lip pencils.”

GOLDE

GOLDE started as a wellness company, making superfood mixes for lattes and matcha. But the company has recently launched a line of face masks. You can find GOLDE products at Sephora, Free People, Madewell, and Urban Outfitters.

Shani Darden

Shandi Darden, a former celebrity esthetician, built her skincare company because she wanted to expand her reach and offer a simple but effective skincare regimen, that included the holy grail of skincare - retinol.

Fenty Beauty

And while there’s no description needed, we would be remiss to exclude the Queen herself, Rihanna’s cosmetics line.

Briogeo

Nancy Twine, is no newcomer to the beauty-sphere – in fact, she made her first foray into the world of natural product formulation at the ripe age of five. During childhood visits to West Virginia, Nancy would assume the role of sous chef to her grandmother, the town's resident beauty guru, in making her coveted homemade hair care.

After an early-twenties move to New York City forced Nancy to trade out her homemade essentials for the store-bought variety, she quickly realized that the natural hair care on the market simply did not live up to its performance claims. Armed with a tiny East Village studio apartment, her grandmother's coveted beauty recipes and a rockstar natural chemist team, Nancy founded Briogeo Hair Care.

A refreshing deviation from a market saturated with products backed by big-name celebrity stylists and deep-pocketed corporations, Briogeo takes it back to basics, offering a high-performance, hair care collection that is naturally based, yet performance driven to provide visible results.

Stephanie DeLacy

Stephanie DeLacy is a blogger and textbook gemini, either reading under a tree or furiously typing with a million tabs open. She is most well known for coming out in favor of the coconut flavor of La Croix. Her writing focuses on dating and relationships, travel, mental health, and stuff she bought on Amazon. Based in Denver, Stephanie lives with her dog, Daphne and cat, Pizza baby, and can be frequently spotted in the drive-thrus of fast food chains. You can follow her at @ladytallhair.
